Overview

The client (Anytime Fitness) wants to redesign their mobile app to create a single unified experience. We are tasked to find out what users need and allow them to have a more engaging experience. The client's goal is to ultimately increase new and existing gym member visits.

step 1: discovering

Competitive analysis

Key findings

  • Mind body class booking feature

  • RepCount workout diary feature

  • Strava and Fitbits gamification and rewards

  • Apple Health health data logging

User research

Initial Approach:

  • Find users at of the Anytime Fitness app and interview them, but we were unable to find real users of the Anytime Fitness App.

Alternative Approach:

  • Interviewed Anytime Fitness gym staff.

  • Interviewed Anytime Fitness gym member via Facebook

  • Gained access to the app and observed users using the app.

Step 2: defining

Affinity map

Pain points:

Anytime Fitness Gym users…

  • Can't view and book classes through the app.

  • Do not utilise the workout tracking function because they feel the process is too complex.

  • Are frustrated with the app's navigation.

Persona

Problem Statement

Anytime Fitness users have to travel to the gym to schedule their workout because the Anytime Fitness app does not allow users to do so from their phone.

step 3: developing

Minimum Viable Product

The MVP should allow users to:

  • Search classes

  • View classes

  • Book classes

How Might WE <HMW> Statements

  • How might we use the app to display class information and allow users to book easily?

  • How might we use the app to encourage users to increase visits to the gym?

  • How might we allow non-members to use the app?

Storyboarding

“This morning Anna was told by her secretary that she has a free hour from 1pm - 2pm and she wants to see if the yoga class is available so she can book it.”

At this stage of the project we will be focusing on the class booking feature.

User flow

User goal:

Anytime Fitness member, Anna, wants to view the details of a yoga class and then book a spot in the class using her iPhone.

Sketching

Step 4: Prototyping

Paper prototype

Wireframing

After a final round of test with the paper prototype, we used Figma to design interactive wireframes to be tested.

Version #1

Version #2

After this round of testing, we upped the prototype’s fidelity, keeping it visually compatible to the Anytime Fitness brand.

Future steps & takeaways

Next steps

Future iterations for the app should include:

  • Tracking Workout - easy and convenient way to manage, recall and track workouts

  • Gym Locator - to increase new member engagement

  • Booking for non member engagement

Takeaways

  • The biggest challenge with this project was actually finding people to interview who knew about or used the Anytime Fitness App, so reaching out for users on Facebook was a good enough alternative.

  • The first people we interview said they wouldn't find use for a gym app, so it was important to keep asking questions that would encourage them to tell us what kind of features would sprout a desire for the app. This was both challenging and inspiring. We realised there is a proper way to conduct ourselves and respond when a interviewee starts off not offering much information.

  • Since this was a re-design project, keeping the visual aspects up with the brand was key.
